Our little corner of the universe is rapidly expanding, changing, and seems to be accreting new talented humans on a monthly basis. So when Flourish Bakery moved into our Garden City neighborhood we immediately reached out to dream up a colorful collection of images that represented their beautiful creations.
Spec projects are a huge part of our exploration and creative process. It's a way for us to build relationships, test out new techniques, and take advantage of down time. Spec projects also provide opportunities for us to creative direct, concept, and drive our own projects. For this shoot, we leaned hard into the colorful spaces both simple and complex, combining various in-studio elements to produce a range of assets Flourish can use across both print and digital.
A large part of our experimentation and execution relied on making the most of the tools and resources we had in studio. Oftentimes with the nature of spec shoots or low budget productions, we're able to get creative with how we're being creative. We knew we wanted to make the macarons float, but how could you accomplish that during production that set us up for success and an efficient post production process? As you can see in the images above, we weren't afraid to get all hands on deck to get the shot just right.
We love a good sweet treat. So our motivation was strong when planning ahead for this pastry based project. Mood boarding and brainstorming, sketching and experimenting, each step got us closer to beholding a box of deliciousness, creating the images and sampling the goods. The spontaneous creative nature of this project paired with the free smells and flavors combined to make it an all time shoot day. It fed our energy on set and gave us life not only as photographers or producers or designers, but as artists (and foodies) 😉
